Tales of Earthsea

The other day I rented a DVD of Tales of Earthsea (Japanese name ”ゲド戦記” Ged’s War Chronicles) from one of the video shop, and I quite enjoyed it.  It is a Japanese anime film which was first released in Japan by Studio Ghibli on July 29, 2006 and is set to be released on August 13, 2010 in the US by Walt Disney Pictures.

This film is loosely based on a combination of plots and characters from the books written by JRR Tolkien (who also is an author of famous books such as Lord of the Ring) (wiki) and is directed by Goro Miyazaki, the eldest son of Hayao Miyazaki.

I love the drawing of the film: colors, images etc.  I love all Ghibli anime.  And I enjoyed watching this Tales of Earthsea by knowing that this film is directed by a son of Hayako Miyazaki as his first work as a film director. (and he also drew this poster shown above)

“Nausicca”, “LAPUTA”, “Grave of the Fireflies“,  “Totoro”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, “Porco Posso”, “Only Yesterday”, “Pom Poko”, “Whisper of the Heart”, “Princess Mononoke”, “Spirited Away”, “The Cat Returns”, “Howl’s Moving Castle” etc…

Which one is your favorite? 🙂

    Hi Ume
I love those movies too. My husband’s favourite is Kiki’s Delivery Service. I love the little cat, but I haven’t seen the movie. I loved Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away. They’re amazing.
Where is the video shop that has them? Do they have english sub-titles?

    Megan,

I rented from Civic Video. They had “spirited away”, “Pom Poko”, “Cat Returns”, “Hawl’s”, “Laputa”, “Tales..” and “Nausica” there 🙂

I love Kiki’s Delivery Service too. The black cat is called “jiji”, and I have the toy in my bed room 😀

I remember I wanted to be a witch when I watched the film

    Thanks Ume!
I bought jiji for my sister’s baby when we went to Japan. It plays a song and moves. You would love it! I’m kind of glad you don’t want to be a witch anymore!

    Haha! 😀

My jiji doesn’t move or say anything, but I can’t stop touching it. The material has a comfortable texture!

I know it’s before Ghibli was created (but was made by the same people), but my favorite is Rupan Sansei: Kariosutoro no Shiro or The Castle of Cagliostro! It’s so much fun and action, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time ^_^
Kiki’s delivery Service made me cry, it was so wonderful (T_T)
If you ever need to find Anime, DVD Heaven on great eastern highway is the best place. It has an Anime section called “Anime Land” (I’m not joking!) which is separate from the rest of the store.

    Hi Bishonencam,

    Wow! Thanks 🙂
I will go to the “anime land” to have a look around.

Rupan is also nice. It’s my cuisine sister’s favourite anime 🙂
I watched 3 DVDs of Rupan film at home in Japan few months ago.
