Japan’s Canned Cocktail / Chu-Hi

Posted January 20th, 2010 in Food 6 Comments »

Cocktails and Chu-Hi have been my favorite alcohol drink since I was a teen.  Chu-Hi is originally made with shochu and carbonated water flavored with various types of syrups such as lemon, green apple and calpis.  ( I used to make them when I was working at Izakaya few years ago 🙂 )  You can find many types of cocktail drinks and Chu-Hi in Japan.  Even convenience stores sell cocktails and Chu-Hi cans.

Suntory, Kirin and Asahi are the big beverage companies that make canned cocktails and Chu-Hi drinks.  There are standard ones such as lemon Chu-Hi to unique ones such as chocolate cocktail.

    Oh wow! I love Chu-Hi! #^_^#

I really wanna try the cola and the chocolate cocktail ones!
I wish I could get those in Perth… actually, maybe it’s good I can’t otherwise I would probably get drunk all the time!

Can you get Chu-Hi in Perth? Maybe Lion Mart???

    Bishonencam!

Maybe Lion sells. I don’t think those chocolate and cola flavor canned Chu-Hi is available here though…

If you want to drink at restaurants, here are some of Japanese restaurants that serve Chu-Hi:

    Banzai Sushi & Noodle
    Ha-Lu
    Satsuki
    Restaurant Jun?
    Senoji??

Driving to a convenience store and get some salad, snacks and Chu-Hi before going to a friend’s house was a typical thing I used to do when I was in Japan. 🙂

    Yo!

I know Banzai do them… but they’re like $7 each! A little pricey maybe?

I didn’t know Restaurant Jun did them. I hope they still do as I thought they had their liquor lisence revoked or something…. maybe they don’t serve the good stuff to non-japanese? 😛

    Bishonencam,

Maybe it’s my mistake! Restaurant Jun may not sell Chu-Hi..
To think about it, the place you can get Chu-Hi is very limited in Perth :p

I just remember I saw Takara Chu-Hi at North Lake Seoul Mart before.

I was in Lions on Fitzgerald street yesterday picking up supplies, they are selling Takara Sukkiri Chu-Hi (タカラ スッキリー) in many flavours at the moment.

One thing to remember about Lions is that they change stock often, ie, they will stop selling something or start something new depending on the exchange rate. Many of my favourites have gone 🙁 She (the boss) told me this, some items will be dropped if they become too expensive.

    Kagemusha,

Takara Sukkiri is a popular Chu-Hi in Japan 🙂 Glad to know Lion sells the item!
It’s shame that they change their stock often, but I understand the reason..

    Thanks for the info ^^
